Writing essays and referencing using MHRA

An essay is an academic piece of work and should therefore be written in an academic style; a style similar to what you read in scholarly articles which is different from the way you would normally speak.

You should use a formal, impersonal and objective style (avoid using "I"...) i.e. instead of writing "In this essay I will talk about...", write something like "This essay deals with..." or "The purpose of this paper is..."

Avoid using contractions i.e. write "is not", "it will" and "they have" instead of "isn't", "it'll" and "they've"

You need to build your argument on other authors' works and must reference any quotes you use, even when you paraphrase them. Your references must be precise, accurate and written in a very specific format. "A reference must therefore enable the reader to find the source referred to as quickly and easily as possible."

James A. Cress Donation

'James A. Cress, 60, Ministerial Secretary for the General Conference of Seventh-day Adventists since 1992, died on the evening of November 26, 2009 at the University of Maryland Medical Center in Baltimore, Maryland. [....]

Cress always considered himself a "pastor on loan" to the world church headquarters, where he led out in training, encouragement and mentoring of pastors, elders, deacons and deaconesses around the world. His position saw him travel to many countries around the globe, holding seminars, preaching sermons and working with local leaders and pastors to promote excellence in ministry. The Roy Graham Library has just received a donation of the personal library of Dr James A. Cress from his wife Sharon Cress. This collection consists of over 2,000 items which will strengthen and further develop the library holdings in the area of Pastoral Studies. Some of the subject areas covered in the Cress collection include: homiletics, Christian counselling, church growth, church administration, church leadership, stewardship, personal life of the clergy, sex and gender issues and evangelism (this list is not exhaustive).

The Roy Graham Library is indebted to Sharon Cress for this generous bequest and for arranging for its packaging and safe delivery to us. Each book contains a book plate to commemorate the life and work of her late husband Dr James A. Cress.

The Library has bought some eBooks to support modules (i.e. Postmodernity and Youth Cultures) currently taught at Newbold College. They can be found through regular catalogue searches or in the list of eBooks.

You will need your Newbold Athens login to access them.

These books are not free. Typically, each title can be accessed 325 to 400 times in a calendar year.

One session lasts 24 hours, so once you have logged on you can use the eBook as many times as you like for the next 24 hours.

Start your revision as early as possible.

- List your exam subjects. Are they worth the same percentage toward your final module grades? Prioritise your revision time around the ones that are worth the most
- Don’t panic – think positive
- Revise often – a little every day will make it stick in your memory better than all at once the day before the exam

- Read them out loud
- Colour code your notes
- Arrange revision sessions with classmates

Health tips

Did you know that fiction is good for you? Yes, really. Even if it is just a few pages a couple of times a week. It will help you relax, escape from the day-to-day stress, open up your mind to new ideas, reduce your stress level... It doesn’t have to be serious or deep, it can just be fun and entertaining.
Have a look at what some of our staff members and students have been reading lately. Feel free to comment and to share with us what you have been reading!

‘I have just finished reading Travels with My Aunt by Graham Greene, a favourite author of mine. Its main character is a man who has lived a dull suburban life but who at his mother’s funeral meets an elderly aunt who teaches him how to live life to the full. This man who has rarely strayed beyond his own neighbourhood eventually finds himself leading an exotic life in South America. The novel is comic unlike many of Greene’s works which treat the religious impulse at work in men and women. For example A Burnt-Out Case is a good study of the legacy of Catholicism in one man’s life. Greene rarely disappoints.’

'A novel I enjoyed was The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini. I loved this very human story about strained family relationships - it's a real page-turner and kept me engrossed from beginning to end. The Kite Runner explores the timeless themes of identity, loyalty, courage and deception. The modern history of Afghanistan provides a fascinating backdrop for the novel.'

'The Secret River by Kate Grenville. This is a richly rewarding novel about the grim realities of life in nineteenth century London and colonial Australia. It contains wonderful characterisation, insightful description of the clash between cultures, and perceptive portrayal of deep tensions which can exist between two people who love one another. It’s evocation of the human ambitions which still affect contemporary Australian life is memorable.'

'The End of the Affair by Graham Greene. I like this short novel for exploring religious questions of faith and doubt in a refreshing way. The theme of a reluctant belief in God – with characters becoming believers against their will – is both fascinating and quite distinctive when placed against more common narratives of belief. It’s quite clearly not a devotional read, spending its time grappling with the difficulties of belief, the push and the pull and the prodding that God finds necessary to get people on track. Easy to read, but much to think about.'

'Minding Frankie by Maeve Binchy. Reading a Maeve Binchy novel is like meeting an old friend and catching up on all the news. In her books she deals with many problems of modern life. I have just read her latest book “Minding Frankie”. It is a story about an unconventional family trying to bring up a baby. Many of the characters have their own secret problems and we are given insight into their lives and relationships. And these relationships are not always what they seem. As with all of her books it was hard to put this one down – a very good read after a stressful day.'

Writing essays

Unless otherwise stated, your essays should be written in an academic style, a style similar to what you read in scholarly articles. The point of an essay is to answer a question or make an argument.
Your essay should be:

Clear

Objective/impersonal – avoid using ‘I’

Formal – slang and contractions such as ‘isn’t’, ‘it’ll’, ‘they’ve’ etc. are not recommended. Instead write ‘is not’, ‘it will’, ‘they have’

Referenced – show where you got your sources

It will normally have 3 major parts: an introduction, the main body and a conclusion.

The introduction should set the context of your essay: present your thesis (argument), the limitations of your paper and a brief outline of how your essay will be structured.

The main body develops your argument in 3 or 4 big sections. Tip: make one point per paragraph and link your paragraphs together with a few sentences to make your essay flow.

The conclusion summarises your argument and the main themes. Do not forget to link it back to the essay question.

Tip: as you write, ask yourself ‘does this answer the question’, ‘what is my point?’, ‘does it flow?’

Google and the Dead Sea Scrolls

The Dead Sea Scrolls are the oldest surviving manuscripts of the Hebrew Bible written during the Second Temple period (515 B.C. – 70 A.D.). Discovered by a Bedouin shepherd in a cave South of Jerusalem in 1946, they are now preserved at the Shrine of the Book in Jerusalem.
Google and the Israel Antiquities Authority have announced their collaboration in digitising the entirety of the Dead Sea Scrolls to make them freely accessible on the Internet. Click here to read more.

Codex Sinaiticus online

The Codex Sinaiticus (literally ‘the Sinai Book’), one of the most significant biblical manuscripts of all time, has been digitised and is now available online here.
Handwritten in Greek in the middle of the fourth century, this document contains half of the Old Testament and Apocrypha (the Septuagint – the version adopted by early Greek-speaking Christians); the oldest complete copy of the New Testament in its original language (koine); and two early Christian texts not included in the biblical canon: the Epistle of Barnabas and ‘The Shepherd’ of Hermas. The text has been heavily annotated by various early correctors (4th-12th centuries) providing an insight into the ways it was copied and used.
The significance of this manuscript is immense for the history of the Bible, the reconstruction of its original text and the history of the Western book. The Codex Sinaiticus, unlike earlier manuscripts – such as the Dead Sea Scrolls that were written in roll format – was written on about 400 large pages of parchment (prepared animal skin) bound together in the book format we know today.
The main discovery of this priceless resource is attributed to the German biblical scholar Constantine Tischendorf who visited the monastery of St Catherine in the Sinai desert in the spring of 1844.
Today the Codex is preserved by four institutions: the British Library, the Library of the University of Leipzig, the National Library of Russia (St Petersburg) and the Holy Monastery of the God-Trodden Mount Sinai (Saint Catherine’s). These four institutions collaborated in the digitisation of the entire manuscript available online since 6 July 2009 with a transcription and a translation.

Murdoch Hall - William G.C. Murdoch (1902-1983)

William G.C. Murdoch grew up on a farm near Strathclyde in Scotland. After leaving school, he spent four years working on the farm. During that time he and his family converted to Seventh-day Adventism and at 18 he enrolled as a student at what is now Newbold College of Higher Education then known as Stanborough College, Watford. After his graduation in 1924, he taught Greek and Hebrew there until 1928 when he moved to Emmanuel Missionary College, Michigan to study for a BA in Theology.

On his return to England in 1930 he was appointed principal of Stanborough College which, in 1931, moved from Watford to Newbold Revel near Rugby and was renamed Newbold Missionary College. In 1936-37, Murdoch was granted a study leave to complete his MA in Semitic Studies at the University of Michigan and married Ruth Rittenhouse whom he had met while studying for his BA. In 1938 he obtained a BD from London University and in 1946 a PhD from the University of Birmingham.

During World War II, Newbold property was requisitioned by the War Office as a site for a new radar system. The College moved to Hockley Heath near Birmingham until 1945 when it moved to its current location in Binfield, Berkshire.

During Murdoch’s time as principal, remunerated manual labour for students was put in place involving literature sales, farming (soil, cows, sheep, chickens), carpentry, plant maintenance, leather goods, and even the production of men’s socks.
After 16 years as principal of Newbold College, he was called, in 1946, to be the new principal of Avondale College, Australia, where he worked for the next 6 years. In 1953 he was appointed chairman of the Department of Systematic Theology at the Theological Seminary in Washington, DC.

In 1972 he was honoured with the Medallion of Merit from the Seventh-day Adventist Church. The citation read ‘no single educator has contributed more to the education of the Adventist ministry.’

William G.C. Murdoch passed away in November 1983 at Loma Linda, California.

The College’s newest teaching and administrative block was named Murdoch Hall after William G.C. Murdoch, the longest serving principal of Newbold College to date.

Salisbury Hall - Homer R. Salisbury (1870-1916)

Homer R. Salisbury was born in Battle Creek, Michigan in 1870. He graduated from Battle Creek College in 1892 and a year later became a teacher and the men’s dean at the Claremont Union College, South Africa, where he stayed until 1896. The men’s dorm was later named Salisbury House in his memory. In 1897, after a year in London, he returned as a teacher to Battle Creek College.

In November 1901, Salisbury and his wife sailed from New York to Liverpool as he had been appointed to be the first principal of a new college that was about to open in North London. January 6 1902 marked the official opening of Newbold College then under the name of Duncombe Hall College, located on Duncombe Road, North London. Salisbury remained its principal until 1907. His motto for the college was ‘Let us go on to perfection’ (Hebrews 6:1).

In 1907 the college moved to a different location near Watford and was renamed Stanborough Park Missionary College. That same year Salisbury went back to the USA and Herbert Camden Lacey succeeded him as principal.

Salisbury died in the Mediterranean in 1916 on his way to India. The New York Times of 6 January 1916 reports that ‘He boarded the steamship Persia at Marseilles, going to join his wife, who is a missionary in India. No official information has yet been received here revealing the nationality of the submarine responsible for the sinking of the Persia, but all the allied warships are keeping close watch in the neighbourhood of where the disaster occurred.’

Newbold College moved to its current location at the close of World War II in 1945. Salisbury Hall, named in memory of its first principal was completed in 1957 and was the first purpose-built building for academic and administrative purposes since the foundation of the college in 1902.

Roy Graham Library

Did you know the official name of the Newbold College Library is actually the Roy Graham Library?

Roy Edward Graham (1929-1984) studied theology at Newbold College where he graduated in 1949 and taught between 1961 and 1967. He obtained an MA from Andrews University, Michigan, and a PhD from Birmingham University. He worked as a pastor and evangelist in various places in England before becoming the Youth and Education director for the British Union Conference. In 1970 he became president of the South England Conference and was appointed principal of Newbold College in 1971. He remained in this position until 1976 when he was called to teach and then work as Provost at Andrews University.

Before moving to its present location, the Library could be found upstairs in Salisbury Hall, where the current Smith Centre is located. During his time as principal, Roy Graham played a significant role in the construction of the new Library building which was completed in 1974. The picture below shows volunteers helping to carry books from Salisbury Hall to the new building.

The building as you know it today was completed in 1987 when its East Wing was added (see picture below).

It was then that the building was named the Roy Graham Library.

The library has a lot of books for school of English students (novels, biographies, plays...). Some have CDs with them. They are organised by level: each level has a different colour:

Gold – Advanced

The Library also has local and national newspapers for you to read.

Writing
Have a look at the books in the blue boxes. They help you improve your writing skills and get ready for your exams.

Use of English
The Library also has books on: grammar, vocabulary, idioms, collocations, articles, prepositions and phrasal verbs. You can also borrow dictionaries that have just been bought for you.

Listening
You can work on your listening skills by borrowing DVDs or books with CDs.

Speaking
Upstairs in the listening rooms, there are books and CDs for you to practise your speaking skills with.

John Harvey Kellogg (1852-1943)

John Harvey Kellogg grew up in Battle Creek, Michigan, in the mid-nineteenth century. He knew James and Ellen White, founders of the Seventh-day Adventist Church, personally. Kellogg and his family were Adventists and he was fascinated by Ellen White’s writings on health and hygiene.

Although he left the Adventist Church in 1907, he remained interested in its health message which he developed in his writings.

Kellogg studied medicine at the University of Michigan Medical School and then obtained his MD from Bellevue Hospital Medical College, New York.

In 1874 he replaced James White as editor of Health Reformer (an Adventist journal) which he renamed Good Health. Two years later he became director of the small, twenty patient Western Health Reform Institute run by the Adventist Church.

By the beginning of the twentieth century, this institution had become a major health centre with over a thousand patients and had been renamed Battle Creek Sanitarium (1903). In the 1994 film The Road to Wellville, Anthony Hopkins starred as Kellogg.

Kellogg was very interested in his patients’ diet and to improve it developed new products such as Corn Flakes, Granola and imitation meat. He also patented a ‘Process of preparing nut meal’ to make peanut butter.

His brother, Will Keith Kellogg, started a company to market the products and promote a healthy and balanced lifestyle. A company that is still very much alive today...

Several of John Harvey Kellogg’s books can be found in the Heritage collection of the Library.

Sabbath School Lesson Quarterly

In the Heritage collection the Library has copies of Sabbath School Lesson Quarterly going all the way back to 1912. These quarterlies are bible study booklets focusing on different themes or books of the Bible. They are interesting as historic artefacts of Adventist publishing in both form and content.

To access the Library’s online resources from home you need an Athens account. (See earlier post – called ‘Athens’ – on how to request an Athens account for Newbold College and self-register for one from the University of Wales Lampeter.)
When you start your research, go to the Athens website.

Click on MyAthens in the left-hand column. You will get a window that looks like this:

Enter your Newbold Athens username and password to access the resources available at Newbold College OR your UWL username and password to access the resources available through the University of Wales Lampeter.

Newspapers

Every day the Library gets The Daily Telegraph, The Guardian and The Independent.
The Library also gets some weekly local newspapers advertising jobs, rooms for rent, regional events, etc.
The newspapers are in the North Wing, Ground Floor.

Library of Congress Classification

The Library uses the Library of Congress Classification to organise the books on the shelves. This scheme is based on the alphabet. Each letter represents a different subject. For example, B stands for philosophy, psychology and religion, H for social sciences, L for education, M for music, etc.

Each letter is then divided into subclasses. B, for example, is divided into sections such as:
BJ Ethics
BS The Bible
BT Doctrinal theology
BX Christian denominations (where most books on Adventism are located)

Signs (left picture) detail the contents of the shelves. They are posted at the end of each book stack in the North Wing, First Floor (the theology section). They are there to make browsing the collection easier.

Shelf flags (right picture) help you find the book you need. They tell you the first and last book on each row.

MHRA

To reference sources in research papers, Newbold College uses the referencing style of the Modern Humanities Research Association.
The MHRA style guide (2008) can be checked out on short-term loan from the Issue Desk. Alternatively, you can download it in PDF from the MHRA website.
Chapter 11 is particularly helpful as it covers footnotes and bibliographies in detail.

Athens

The Library pays for a vast amount of online journals and materials. If you try accessing these resources from home, you’ll notice that an Athens username and password are needed. This is when Athens comes in handy!

Athens is a system which gives you access to the Library’s online resources when you are not on campus. Each university pays for specific resources, which means each university has different resources through Athens. This is why you cannot access the University of Wales Trinity St David online resources using your Newbold Athens login, and vice versa.

Call number: the combination of letters and numbers on the spine of the book which tells you which shelf the book is on.

Checking a book out: borrowing a book.
Document delivery request: the form you need to fill out to ask for a book/article from another library.
Holds: reservations on books checked out to other users.
Interlibrary loans: books/articles borrowed from other libraries.

If the book you need is checked out, try looking it up on Google Books. Can’t guarantee it will be there or that it will be available in its entirety but it’s always worth checking. For example, large sections of the following books can be read on Google Books:

If you are searching for books on a specific topic but are not sure of the titles or authors, use ‘Simple Search’ and type keywords describing your topic. If your search gets no results, don’t worry: try swapping the words around or use synonyms.

If you know the exact title, select ‘Browse Search’ and the ‘TI (All Titles)’ option in the drop-down menu.

Sometimes you may also want to look for books by specific authors. Then, select ‘AU (All Authors)’ and type the author’s name starting with their surname (last name).

Once you have found the book you need on the catalogue you will see something like this:

Turnitin
Turnitin is a system for managing the submission and marking of assignments. It also identifies plagiarism. At the beginning of each semester you will receive one email from TurnitinUKHelpdesk. Use the information in this email to set up your account. Once that has been set up, the instructions on how to submit your assignments will appear.

Self Issue Unit

The Self Issue Unit located in the East Wing Ground Floor of the Library allows you to check books out for yourself.

Here is how to use it:

1. Scan the barcode of your student card.

2. Scan the book's barcode making sure you put the spine of the book right in the cradle.

3. You'll hear a click which means your book has been checked out.

4. Print a receipt (if you want one) and you are ready to go!

Short-term loans (STL)

The short-term loan collection (or STL as it is called in the Library catalogue) is situated by the Issue Desk. It is made up of books that are recommended by lecturers and heavily used by students. They are organised alphabetically by class title. They can be borrowed for one day at a time and need to be returned by 11.00 am the next day (to avoid the £1 fine!).

Short-term loans can be booked a week in advance. Just ask the person at the Desk and they will write your name down on the booking list.
